Spain set to introduce gambling advertising restrictions

Spain’s ruling Socialist Worker’s Party (PSOE) is set to introduce new controls to protect the country’s citizens against gambling addiction, including restrictions on advertising. The measures are included in the PSOE budget for 2019, which has been agreed with Podemos, another left-wing party that is supporting the ruling minority administration.

They aim to tackle “aggressive advertising tactics” used by iGaming operators, such as the use of famous sportspeople to promote their brands and bonus offers.

“It is increasingly common that broadcasts of football and basketball are flooded with ads for live betting, making this activity accessible to all types of people, including minors, and creating serious problems with gambling addiction,” the budget document says. “It is essential to address this situation.”

As a result the budget sees PSOE pledge to bring in regulations for gambling advertising similar to those currently in place for tobacco products. Since 2005 Spain has prohibited all tobacco advertising in a bid to reduce smoking.

This will be supported by new efforts to educate players about how to better manage their gambling and limit their consumption of gambling products. The PSOE will encourage the iGaming industry to participate in developing ways to make gambling safer, and helping players avoid its negative effects.

These new controls may be accompanied by an increase in fees paid by online operators. The budget states that the payments made by operators to support the administrative management of gambling will be “reoriented” to allocate a percentage to be used to fund educational, preventative and intervention initiatives, as well as helping tackle the negative effects of gambling.
