PGA Tour addresses sports betting benefits for the USA

The PGA Tour has announced its support of potential sports betting in the US, should the Supreme Court find in favour of New Jersey in the current Christie v NCAA case. “Sports betting regulation will help us achieve that purpose by promoting integrity, further engaging our fans and creating new opportunities commercially,” said PGA Tour’s Andy Levinson.

Andy Levinson, PGA Tour senior vice president of tournament administration, spoke to TotallyGaming.com about how a legalised sports betting landscape could heighten The Tour’s overall product, from integrity, commercial and growth perspectives: “If sports betting is legalised and regulated, we can better ensure the integrity of our competitions, provide adequate protection for consumers and help us reach a much broader audience.”

“Additionally, there are commercial opportunities for us, which obviously benefits us as an organisation. The PGA Tour is a membership organisation, and our primary purpose is to provide opportunities for our members and to promote the sport of professional golf,” Levinson added.

“We believe that sports betting regulation will help us achieve that purpose by promoting integrity, further engaging our fans and creating new opportunities commercially. Any revenues we receive from betting would go to the Tour’s general operating funds, which are primarily used for member benefits,” Levinson concluded.

Christie v NCAA was brought forward by ex-New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, and seeks to strike down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act 1992 (PASPA), that sees sports betting fall under a federal ban, except four states with certain conditions.
