Government's leader in Senate secures gambling law vote after elections in Brazil

Brazilian Senator Carlos Portinho (PL-RJ), government’s leader in the Senate, told local media Valor that there are some voting priorities for the second half of the year and that several issues, still on hold, will be on the table after the elections, such as the one that legalizes gambling in Brazil. He admits that the matter is controversial, but that it “needs to be regulated.”

Senator Carlos Portinho (PL-RJ), leader of Brazil’s government in the Senate, told local media Valor that the Bolsonaro’s administration, if elected, will not break the spending ceiling and that numerous issues still in the House will be unlocked in the second semester, especially after the elections.

Among them, the senator highlights the social benefits that finish at the end of the year and the negotiations to unlock the income tax reform, which has been stalled in the House for a long time.

Portinho stated: "I don't really like using gambling to support the nursing salary floor, but I understand that you have to look for sources of funds.”

For him, gambling should be regulated, and highlighted that in the area of sports betting “international companies are there selling bets, earning a lot and paying nothing [taxes].”

Portinho highlighted that “what worries me is the manipulation of results, not the bets. There is already manipulation in sports, in football; I followed cases as a lawyer. Doing nothing is worse. This topic will go after the elections. I was very sincere with Arthur Lira that there is resistance in the Senate,” he added.
