Request from Senator Soraya Thronicke

Senate Science and Technology Committee to discuss impacts of iGaming on society

The Senate Science and Technology Committee (CCT) approved this Wednesday (7) a request from Senator Soraya Thronicke to hold a public hearing on the impact of online casinos on society. The debate will also address the new ordinance from Finance Ministry that regulates the activity, aiming to protect gamblers and ensure honesty in games. The date of the meeting is yet to be defined by the committee.

As online casinos gain popularity on social media, concerns about the negative effects of this phenomenon are also growing. The Science and Technology Committee approved a request from Senator Soraya Thronicke (Podemos-MS) for the committee to hold a public hearing on the social impacts of gambling.

The senator argues that the abuse of these platforms can cause psychological and emotional harm to many people. For her, it is crucial to discuss these issues broadly and responsibly.

“We know that electronic gambling, jogo do bicho, and slot machines have always existed in Brazil in a hidden way and we have never been able to stop them. There are already people addicted to these types of games, but we do not have the data to develop a public policy.”

The hearing will also address the content of the Ministry of Finance ordinance that defines rules for online gambling and live gaming studios, as well as criteria for the certification of each game. The regulation will come into effect on January 1, 2025, and aims to prevent abuse.

The Science and Technology Committee has not yet set a date for the public hearing approved this Wednesday (7).
