Macau’s visitor spending rises 16.6 %

Total visitor spending in Macau amounted to US$ 1.7 billion in the first quarter of 2017, representing an increase of 16.6 % year-on-year, according to data from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC). The first quarter saw spending by overnight visitors increase 19.6 % year-on-year to US$ 1.29 billion, while same day visitor spending increased 6.7 % to US$ 354 million.

In terms of country, visitors from mainland China spent the most per capita, rising 13.6 % year-on-year, while per capita spending by visitors from Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan grew by 11.6 %, 0.4 % and 1.8 percent year-on-year, respectively.

According to the data, most of the spending was on shopping - at 43.7 %, while accommodation and food & beverage made up of 26.9 % and 21.3 % respectively.

DSEC also informed that visitor arrivals to Macau in April increased 11 % year-on-year to 2.7 million.

Visitors from mainland China increased 7.1 % year-on-year to 1.8 million in the month, with those travelling under the Individual Visit Scheme rising 18.5 % in the month.

Visitors from South Korea, and Hong Kong surged 48.7 % and 25.3 % respectively, while visitors from Taiwan fell 2.8 %.

The April arrivals brought total visitor arrivals for the first four months of 2017 to 10.6 million, an increase of 6.9 % year-on-year.
