Second-largest prize ever

US Powerball jackpot reaches US$700 million

The Powerball jackpot for today (Wednesday) drawing has increased to an estimated US$700 million, the game’s highest since its world-record setting $1.58 billion jackpot in January 2016. The cash option on today’s Powerball prize is an estimated US$443.3 million.

Today’s Powerball drawing will be the 21st since the jackpot was last hit on June 10, when a US$447.8 million jackpot was won on a ticket sold in California.

Tickets sold in California, Florida and Tennessee each won a share of the record setting US$1.58 billion jackpot on January 13, 2016. If the US$700 million jackpot were to be hit, it would be the second-largest lottery jackpot ever won in North America.

Powerball tickets are US$2 each and can be played in 44 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The final jackpot tally will be announced during the live draw show tonight, although it's still possible the official estimate will be increased again before then.

Powerball jackpots start at $40 million and roll until the jackpot is won. Players win the jackpot by matching five numbers from a field of 69 numbers and one Powerball number from a field of 26 numbers. Drawings are conducted each Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 pm Eastern Time.

Maryland Lottery and Gaming Director Gordon Medenica expressed what many are feeling during this jackpot surge: "So happy to see the excitement building again! Great fun!"
