Gilberto Occhi leaves Caixa to take over the Health Ministry

The president of the Brazilian state-owned bank Caixa Econômica Federal, Gilberto Occhi, leaves the bank's presidency next week to take over the Ministry of Health, whose head, Ricardo Barros, will leave his position to run a vacancy in the Deputies Chamber. VP of Finance, Arno Meyer, could take the chair of the bank. Caixa has been responsible for the operations of lottery games in Brazil since 1961.

The president of Caixa Economica Federal, Gilberto Occhi, leaves the presidency of the bank next week to take over the Ministry of Health. Ricardo Barros, Health’s head, will leave the position to dispute a vacancy in the Chamber of Deputies.

The Planalto defends that the ministers who will contest the elections leave their positions until April 5 (the maximum deadline for decommissioning is April 7). The idea is to have a margin for publication in the Official Gazette of the Union. Barros will leave already on March 28, because he will be president of the Mixed Budget Commission.

If it comes under the Ministry of Finance, Caixa's vice president of finance, Arno Meyer, will take over the presidency of the bank. He is an economist and has held positions in the Ministries of Planning and Finance. Behind the scenes, however, there is pressure for political indication. In this case, two vice presidents of the bank gain strength: Fábio Lenza (from Products and Retail) and Marcos Fernando Jacinto (from People). There is still the possibility of being chosen from outside.

According to the new statute of Caixa, the vice presidents are appointed by the Board of Directors, chaired by the National Treasury secretary, Ana Paula Vescovi. The presidency of the bank, however, is the prerogative of the President of the Republic.
