Poker is experiencing a moment of growth and consolidation in Brazil. After a period of popularization through online, today the game already has a sports status with an audience of 7 million people signing up for tournaments and participating in clubs.
According to Igor Trafane, president of CBTH (Brazilian Confederation of Texas Hold'em), there are in average 500 poker venues, some exclusive, with a set up cost of R $ 70K, and that offer training and access to the services of the largest companies in the industry.
In tournaments, another lucrative branch for both organizers and players, the general rule is that only 15% of the membership fee goes to cover the organization costs. The remainder is divided as prizes to participants depending their positions in the competition.
Television broadcasts also helped poker gain more popularity and win more fans. The socioeconomic effect of these events in places with tourism potential also gave poker the sporting position.
