Brazilians would already spend close to USD 630 million a year on online betting. This is what some studies carried out by the national government on the subject. Although there are no official data, however, it is already known that thousands of people have the habit of betting online.
Even with a market with great potential, there are problems to be discussed. The first is the issue of legalization. Running bets in national territory is contravention. That is why Brazilians bet on legalized international sites in their own countries.
With that activities, the profit of the Brazilian bets remains outside the country, what means that the Brazilian State and the Brazilian society do not gain anything. That is why the Brazilian government urgently addresses the question of legalization. Only with websites in Brazil and registered in the country the State can start to collect taxes.
Another concern is the handling of results at sporting events. Last year there were reports of scandals in the third division of São Paulo football.
Europe, that already has a more
consolidated betting market, is a good example of control. The governments and
bookmakers have developed mechanisms to fight any attempt of match fixing.
Through historical patterns and control of money movement, anything strange in
an event can be controlled. All this, combined with an effective legislation
that punishes the guilty would be an ideal set for bets in Brazil.
