Caixa wants to be "operator agent" of gambling in Brazil

Gilberto Occhi, president of Brazilian state-owned bank Caixa, said that the bank wants to be an operator of gambling in the country, overseeing the activity and remunerating the winners. Occhi said he has already talked to Ciro Nogueira and Fernando Bezerra, author and rapporteur of the legalization bill that is being processed in the Senate. He estimates that the legalization of the activity can generate a collection of US$ 6 billion per year.

Occhi said that he has already spoken with senators Ciro Nogueira (PP-PI) and Fernando Bezerra (PMDB-PE), respectively author and rapporteur of the bill proposing legalization of gambling in Brazil and which is being processed in the Senate.

Last week, governors from at least 15 states asked the presidents of the Chamber, Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ), and the Senate, Eunício Oliveira (PMDB-CE), to expedite the project. According to the governors, the taxes collected would be used as revenue for a public security fund.

"The two parliamentarians with whom I spoke, both understand that Caixa must participate in the process, it should be part of this whole structure of the legalization of the gaming, monitoring, all this. Our request to parliamentarians is that Caixa could participate at some point in this management," said Occhi.

Caixa is the lottery operator in Brazil and is responsible, for example, of Mega-Sena and Timemania. According to Occhi, the initial forecast is that legalization of gambling could generate a raise of US$ 6 billion per year.

According to Occhi, the greatest potential is in electronic gaming. "It is the biggest betting potential in the country, more than bingo and more than casino. It can be important for the development of some regions of the country."

"Because there is the game, we can not deny it to anyone, people bet, and Brazil is letting these tax revenues go," says the president. president of Caixa.

"The resumption of this discussion on its own is an important step. This is important for Brazil. Because there is already gaming, we can not deny this to anyone, people bet and Brazil is letting these tax revenues go away," concluded Caixa’s president.
