Japan government reintroduces gambling addiction bill

Japan’s ruling parties reintroduced last Friday a bill for measures against gambling addiction in the House of Representatives, the lower chamber of the Diet. The nation’s government will possibly be looking to pass the bill before the end of this year’s legislative session of the Diet on December 9.

Looking to the start of so-called integrated resorts that feature casinos, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and its coalition partner, Komeito, will seek cooperation from opposition party Nippon Ishin no Kai, which already has proposed similar legislation, for swift enactment of the bill.

The ruling coalition-sponsored bill calls on the government to draw up basic plans, including programs to treat addicts and support their social rehabilitation. Although the LDP-Komeito camp submitted an antiaddiction bill in June this year, it was scrapped due to the breakup of the Lower House for a snap election.

Former Defense Minister Gen Nakatani, who heads the LDP’s working group on measures to cope with gambling addiction, told reporters that the ruling bloc will make efforts for the reintroduced bill’s early parliamentary passage.
