GMB - Why did BODOG choose Brazil as one of the
2 markets to enter South America?
Ed Pownall - At
this early stage we wanted to test the appetite for the brand and poker
generally so choosing Brazil was a fairly obvious choice in terms of population
size and relative maturity in the market.
GMB - What services will be offered to
Brazilian users and since when?
EP - From right now! Poker, casino and sportsbook but we see poker as our
biggest USP…most poker rooms have tried to be more friendly to recreational
players since we released our ‘all anonymous tables’. Our version is the
fairest for the non-professional player as those ‘sharks’ cannot find your
username and use your own data against as with other poker rooms. Yes, that
happens.
GMB - What expectations do you have in
terms of numbers for the Brazilian market?
EP - Very hard to tell, we know there is competition but we’ve been in this
game longer than most so hope our standards and product will prove to be
popular but complacency would be foolish.
GMB - Brazil is analyzing a future
gaming law but does not yet have one. Does this situation prevent you from
offering services of your porfolio?
EP - We always support regulation in any markets as long as the the system
is put in place to create a growth industry not just as a tax grab.
GMB - Will the company have a future
physical presence in the country (offices, servers, etc.)?
EP - That would be a longer term
consideration and too early to tell at his stage.
GMB - BODOG is the first and only company that
offers Bitcoins as a payment methods. What can you tell us about this
innovation?
EP - We see this as the
future of payment solutions, not just in our industry but for online commerce
generally. Change is always hard but as trust grows in the concept and other
merchants take it on board it will grow exponentially.
GMB - PaiWangLo holding recently acquired
BODOG's poker assets. What change does this represent for the company?
EP - It means we
can concentrate on marketing our product rather than the tech side of running a
poker network. Win-win for everybody.
GMB - After Brazil and Mexico, which markets
would continue in Latin America?
EP - Again this will depend on
success but if everything goes according to plan there’s no reason not expand
across as many as like what we have to offer.
