Brazil makes official its new tourism agency with funds from lotteries

The Minister of Tourism of Brazil, Marx Beltrão, announced yesterday the creation of Brazil + Tourism, a package of measures to strengthen the sector in Brazil. It was informed that 0.75% of the gross collection of prizes of federal lotteries will be destined to finance the new entity, deducting this amount from the one destined to the prizes.

The package of measures announced by Minister Marx Beltrão aims to bring technical solutions to historical problems, increase the number of domestic and foreign tourists, contribute to improving national destinations, provide regional development and generate employment and income. The announcement was made at the Ulysses Guimarães Convention Center, with the presence of industry authorities.

"These actions are the result of plenty of dialogue in order to understand the needs of the sector. Brazil + Tourism has come to correct a historical myopia and make tourism seen as a protagonist in the generation of employment and income. The time of tourism has come," said Beltrão.

The package includes suggestions from members of the national tourism production chain and from international organizations such as the World Tourism Organization (UNO) and the World Tourism and Travel Council (WTTC).

The idea with the new Brazil + Tourism is to change the scenario and jump from 6.5 million foreign tourists in the country per year (2016) to 12 million in 2022. It is estimated that revenue from visitors will grow from US$ 6 billion a year to US$ 19 billion. Another expected impact is the inclusion of 40 million Brazilians in the travel consumer market. Currently, less than half the population travels every year (about 60 million).

The creation of almost 6 million jobs is another of the expected consequences as a result of Brazil + Tourism. Globally, the sector registers for one in 11 jobs (9%) according to WTO. In Brazil, tourism directly and indirectly employs 7 million people.
