The truth about betting shops in Brazil

Are betting shops legal? Second, can I open a bookstore in Brazil and become a money changer? How does a betting shop work? The specialized web site Apostaganha Brasil decided to discuss with seriousness a matter in which few speak publicly, but that is one of the most consulted topics in its Fan Page on Facebook, either to ask questions about the operation or to ask how to open one.

For those who do not know about this or are more accustomed to sports betting online is worth a clarification on the betting shops. This betting points are a rising mode in the country, according to Rodrigo Cesar, administrator of Apostaganhabr, with 8 years of experience in online betting, specialy in Brazilian and South American football.

In the Southeast part of the country they are not so popular, but in the Northeast in some regions already has more movement than the traditional local "jogo do bicho”. A betting shop is nothing more than a physical place or spot that offers the same services that online bookmakers, but directly to the bettor.

Of course they do not manage all the bets and sometimes even use bookmakers as a reference but they are an accessible and direct way for people to place bets without needing internet access or account at a bookmaker.

You get there, make your paid bet and receive a voucher as a guarantee for later receipt of the prize if you win. Whoever is behind these groups is really a mystery. Criminal groups or organized individuals control these spots and despite promising facility they offer no guarantees.

It's legal? What guarantees do I have?

Even because their acting is in illegality. For those who do not remember the law of criminal contraventions that prohibits the exploitation of gambling in Brazil prohibits the local exploitation of this type of activity in the country. In the case of online bookmakers they do not incur this prohibition since their sites are based in countries in which the bets are legalized.

But these betting shops are expressly prohibited by law. As Art. 50 says: "Establish or exploit gambling in a public place or accessible to the public, either by paying in or out.” So the answer to our first question: The betting shops are not legal.

When betting on these shops, you have no legal guarantee whatsoever of receiving the prize. And it's no use complaining later to the police since that kind of activity is completely deregulated. Many may say that online sites are the same. But it does not. The online gambling websites are legalized in their respective countries and they follow the strictest international safety certificates for its operation. Very different from the betting shops around the corner.

Expansion in the Northeast

A report from the Alagoas gazette by Severino Carvalho and Thiago Gomes investigated the expansion of betting shops in the North and Northeast of the country. According to them, the business began on the border of Alagoas with Pernambuco and today they already threaten to the lotteries of the Caixa. There are at least 15 "companies" with many different names. One even uses the "Apostaganha" brand in a completely illegal way.

The business already moves high numbers with several points, money changers and bettors. Everything running under the beards of the state and without paying any cent of taxes. And always exploring football as the main activity.

In some cities the shops work close to the police authorities. In some cases the report saw children placing their bets. In bars at night it is also common to see people making their sports bets with money changers who even offer to receive a credit card.

Answering the many message asking how to open a betting store. There is no legal way to open one. Because they are completely outlaw activities. The groups that control the activity often have an association with organized crime which makes everything more difficult.

Is it Good or Bad?

This phenomenon has two sides as everything in life. One negative and one positive. First, it is important to note that the Brazilian likes to bet. Even in shops without infrastructure and few guarantees to get paid. There is a huge potential market for sports betting.

The downside is the illegality and poor structure that these shops offer. In this sense, I think it is much better to look for one of the online bookmakers. With its recognized know-how, legality wherever they are located, and following the top security certificates in online bookmakers, your betting experience will be much more secure and complete.

Anyway the proliferation of these betting shops shows that the sports betting issue can no longer be neglected in Brazil. The Brazilian wants bets and will do it where it is available.
