‘"If Brazil opens gaming market we’ll improve instruments to fight illicit"

Astério Pereira dos Santos, the new national Secretary of Justice, does not have an opinion about the legalization of gambling in Brazil. But he makes it clear: 'we can not be kept from creating something by claiming that we have difficulty fighting.' He also states that there are areas suitable for casino facilities and others that do not.

The new national Secretary of Justice of Brazil, Astério Pereira dos Santos, said in an interview with Globo newspaper that once approved the legalization of gaming ways of combating money laundering and other forms of crimes that may be related to the activity will be improved.

"Of course, this is a subject of great concern to us, but we can not prevent this from being created by claiming that we have difficulty in combating. Just as we have created mechanisms to seek money abroad (in current anti-corruption operations) we will also perfect the instruments to inhibit the illicit involving gaming," he said.

Regarding the implementation of a new gaming market, the new secretary said that it should be done with criteria analyzing the characteristics of each region. "I can give a technical opinion regarding the implementation, which should be with criteria. We can not have a proliferation of casinos. There are regions that can receive a casino and some others that are inappropriate.”

The Attorney General has taken office as National Secretary of Justice and Citizenship of the Ministry of Justice last March 23rd. In order to take the position, Astério Pereira retired from the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro, institution in which he entered in 1991. The new National Secretary of Justice and Citizenship is graduated in Legal and Social Sciences by Fluminense Federal University and by the School of Formation Of Officials. He has served as Secretary of Penitentiary Administration of the State of Rio de Janeiro from 2003 to 2006. As Coordinator of Security and Intelligence of the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro, he served from 2007 to 2008.
