Casinos legalization appears as a pillar for hospitality sector in Brazil

Fernando Baracho Martinelli, director of Interval do Brasil, placed the legalization of casinos as one of the pillars of new business for the Brazilian hotel industry, which could increase US$ 19.6 billion to tourism, during the panel 'Current Scenario of Hospitality in Brazil and New Business Models' at the CONOTEL event, which took place in Sao Paulo.

Conducted by the Director of Interval in Brazil, Fernando Baracho Martinelli, the panel was held at the 59th CONOTEL -National Congress of Hotels- and also received the Director of Intellectual Rights of the Ministry of Culture, Dr. Rodolfo Tamanaha, who addressed the topic "Copyright and the Hotel Industry".

Tamanaha explained about the aspects in which the MinC acts in relation to the Intellectual Rights, with formulation and evaluation of the public policies, strengthening of subsidies, among others. In this context, the lawyer spoke about copyright, regulated by ECAD, and that, according to research done in 2015, the cultural and creative industry produced US$ 2.25 billion in revenue generated worldwide, surpassing telecommunications services (US$ 1.57 billion).

Martinelli continued the panel highlighting the current scenario of the hotel industry, as this sector has found sources of funding over the years and how it has advanced to the panorama of today in the last ten years. He recalled the decades of hotel consolidation, casino hotel times and their ban, the creation of Embratur and the arrival of international groups in 1970.

Martinelli also mentioned the benefit of building hotels with government-funded credit lines, entering the real estate plan in 1994, until the economic crisis of the US real state sector in the late 2000s, investments in major sporting events in Brazil, and The CVM (Comissão de Valores Mobiliários) alert on the condo-hotel model in 2013. He also commented that many companies from other segments have entered the hotel industry, bringing other visions and characteristics to the market. These brands care about the mix of leisure and professional life, developing products for the new generations.

To sum up, Martinelli raised some of the pillars of the hotel industry in Brazil:

- Brazil + Tourism Plan of the Ministry of Tourism, which aims to reach 12 million foreign tourists in 2022.

- The plan has 118 changes in the General Tourism Law. "The tourist is in the hands of few airlines. Imagine what it would be like to bring one of the biggest companies to Brazil, how would tourism be boosted?" he says.

- Multi-Property Law Project - the sales model of fractional UH's has exponential growth in the country;

- The legalization of casinos, which can increase tourism revenue by US$ 19.6 billion (1% of GDP) with two ongoing law projects;

- Transformation of Embratur into the Brazilian Tourism Promotion Agency, which now has US$ 62.3 million for investments in Brazilian promotional activities abroad.
