Colombia starts blocking illegal online gambling sites

Following its fight against illegal gambling, Colombia formally started blocking betting sites that do not comply with the country’s laws. The Minister of Finance, Mauricio Cárdenas, reported about the closure of Play2wincasino, one of the 325 sites that make up the list of sites that operate illegally in the country.

"We have given the instruction to Coljuegos to block ilegal and cheaters and evaders sites, like Play2wincasino," commented Cardenas.

Initially, TigoUne became the first internet operator to block unregulated gambling websites. Created in 2006 and owned by Grupo EPM, it is one of the most important Colombian telecommunications operators in the country.

Juan B. Pérez Hidalgo, president of Coljuegos, reported two weeks ago that the entity already notified Internet providers about the steps to follow, as they are responsible for restricting access to websites that do not comply with the regulations in force in Colombia.

Claro and Movistar will be the next to execute the orders of Coljuegos.

The president of Coljuegos said that the entity expects to raise more than US$ 2.6 million in operating rights during the first years of operation of online gaming. So far, the only authorized company in the country is Wplay.co, of Aquila Global Group.
