TO CONTAIN EVASION OF CURRENCIES

Project wants to ban betting on foreign gambling sites in Brazil

A project by Senator Ciro Nogueira (PTB-PI), presented on Thursday (29), wants to prohibit in Brazil the operations of credit or debit cards, or any electronic currency, on foreign-based gambling sites or online poker bets, among others. The parliamentarian justifies that the measure is necessary to contain currency evasión, estimated at US$ 913 million per year.

"There is legislative grey area that prohibits the exploitation of gambling in Brazilian territory, but it does not prevent gamblers from spending resources on gambling on the Internet from companies based in other territories, such as Costa Rica, Gibraltar, the Isle of Man, Curaçao, etc.," argues the senator, in justifying the project.

Nogueira cites examples from other countries that have adopted similar measures, such as the United States, Australia and France, which created such a restriction even though gambling was legalized.

"We know that one of the motivating principles of the legalization of gambling is precisely its potential collection for the State, since the explorers of this activity will repay to society part of the revenues earned in the form of taxes. For this reason, we propose the creation of mechanisms in which the resources that would be used for the practice of games of chance operated by companies based abroad are preserved in the country," adds the senator.

Ciro Nogueira is also the author of the bill that legalizes gambling in Brazil, a proposal that has been underway in the Senate since 2014 and is currently on the Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ).
