Trinidad and Tobago moving to regulate casinos

Legislators of Trinidad and Tobago have moved forward with a project that would regulate the gaming industry. Although the government has not revealed further information, local press has assured the market could face several changes soon under an updated law.

According to information published by Trinidad Express, local government is moving full speed ahead to have gambling legislation in place to make way for the proposed Gambling Control Commission by next year.

When Parliament resumes in September, the Joint Select Committee appointed to consider and report on the Gambling (Gaming and Betting) Control Bill, will hold public hearings involving stakeholders who would have submitted their views on the proposed Bill.

The legislation seeks to provide for the establishment of a gambling and gaming commission, which would regulate the gaming and betting sectors.

The 12-member JSC was established in February this year. It is chaired by Finance Minister Colm Imbert, who last week refused to update the Business Express on how far the committee had reached in terms of its review of the Bill.

JSC member Senator Wade Mark stated that the Committee is expected to meet before Parliament resumes on September 6. "We are now attempting to hold public hearings with stakeholders. We are trying to fix dates. When Parliament resumes the work of the JSC will continue,” he said.
