“It’s a matter of months that gaming regulation comes into effect in Brazil”

Brazilian Senator Ciro Nogueira said that it is a matter of time that the project of his authorship, PL 186/2014 that legalizes gaming in the country, is approved and that the ban on the activity will come to an end. According to him, the bill can still be voted on in the first half of 2018 and that the sector can yield R$ 18 billion (US$ 5.7b) annually in taxes only.

Ciro Nogueira said that his proposal underway in the Senate from 2014 will be on taken to vote in the first half of 2018. The president of the PP (local political party) explained that the bill is quite broad and will be tightly controlled so that there is no feared money laundering.

"The days of illegality are indeed in the end, after all, the project is already in voting in Brasilia and it is a matter of months to be legalized and in practice the regulations that approve the development of gaming activities throughout the country," said Ciro Nogueira.

In addition, he added that this is an excellent opportunity to boost tourism and Brazil's economy, as gaming are much sought after by players around the world, such as slot machines, for example, that take millions of punters to Las Vegas every year.

The senator again explained that the release of the activity would give the public coffers about R$ 18 billion (US$ 5.7b) a year in taxes alone; money that, at the request of the governors of several states, can be used as an investment in public safety and against violence, as well as other areas of public service such as health, education and social security.

According to Ciro Nogueira, gaming already take place illegally throughout the country and the only difference is that the government would have greater control over it and could also profit from the casinos that would probably leverage tourism in the country.

The project presented by Ciro Nogueira also provides for the release of jogo do bicho, bingo, video bingo, sports betting and non-sports as well as online casinos in leisure complexes such as hotels and resorts, since they have sufficient structure to house this kind of activities.
