Playboy may close its magazines to invest in casinos

According to information from the traditional Wall Street Journal, Playboy is considering the possibility of officially closing the operations of its print magazine to focus only on its businesses involving nightclubs and casinos, as well as licensing the brand for new products and services.

"We want to focus on what we call 'World of Playboy,'" Ben Kohn, a partner in the private equity firm of Rizvi Traverse, the controlling shareholder of Playboy, said the newspaper.

For the executive, the brand is much bigger than a legacy based only on the publication. Rizvi, who invested US$207 million in Playboy Enterprises in 2011, began thinking about the idea right after the death of the company's founder, Hugh Hefner, in September 2017. "Hefner's contract with Rizvi required the magazine's continuity while Hugh was still alive," a former employee at the New York Post said at the time.

The most natural way is for Playboy to transition from a media company to become a brand management company. It would be the end of the most famous men's magazine of all time, created in 1953.
