Brazilians bought more than 13 billion lottery tickets in 2017

CAIXA Lotteries registered a total of US$4.3 billion in bets in 2017, a nominal growth of 8.14% compared to 2016. Given the macroeconomic scenario of a gradual resumption of economic growth, betting volume has exceeded the state-owned bank's expectations. Among the modalities, Mega-Sena remains the best-selling product, accounting for 42% of the collection.

The highlight of the year was the success of Mega da Virada, which offered the biggest prize in the history of lotteries in Latin America. The US$95.5 million was divided among 17 winning bets, also a record for this special contest, which still registered the highest collection per contest, of more than US$ 275 million. Added to this result was Timemania, which performed 71.8% higher than in 2016.

Among the modalities, Mega-Sena remains the best-selling product, accounting for 42% of the collection, followed by Lotofacil and Quina, responsible for 26% and 18% of participation, respectively.

According to CAIXA's vice president of Government Funds and Lotteries, Deusdina dos Reis Pereira, 2017 was a year particularly marked by opportunities and challenges, ending with the success of Mega da Virada.

"Only that special contest distributed more than US$133 million to 178 thousand bets. During the year, the CAIXA Lotteries offered in prizes more than US$1.3 billion, consolidating the social role of Lotteries in Brazil, in the strategy of growth and maintenance of the country's public policies, allowing the realization of bettors' dreams through millionaire prizes," said Deusdina.
