Federal Deputy Marcelo Álvaro Antonio

For new Tourism Minister gambling legalization has yet to be studied in Brazil

Deputy Onyx Lorenzoni, future Minister of the Civil House, announced the federal deputy Marcelo Álvaro Antonio, from the miner PSL, as the new Minister of Tourism. 'With regard to gambling, I have my reservations. I think the issue needs to be studied and discussed but if an PL comes up about it, guarantees and controls that prevent money laundering these venes should be established,' Antonio recently said in his official Twitter account.

Antonio is the second name of the party of the future president Jair Bolsonaro that is confirmed for a portfolio. Gustavo Bebianno, former president of the party, will be Minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic.

Two weeks ago, the deputy was consulted by a user in his official Twitter account about whether he has an interest in putting again on agenda the gaming issue. "With regard to gambling, I have my reservations. I think the theme needs to be studied and discussed. I do not think it is a priority for the country, but if an PL comes up about it, guarantees and controls that prevent money laundering these venues must be established," was the response of Marcelo Álvaro Antonio.

After the announcement, the future minister gave a press conference and said he will fight for the sector to have an important budget. "I am going to fight, yes, so that the ministry can have an important budget, given that tourism will effectively participate in this moment of redemption, to bring Brazil back on the development path," Alvaro said at the Banco do Brasil Cultural Center (CCBB) in Brasilia, where the transitional office is installed. "This budget dispute is already starting now in the CMO (Mixed Budget Commission)," he added.

Antonio was re-elected to the position of federal deputy in this year's election. He has been in the Chamber since 2014, where he joined the Commissions on Mines and Energy, Finance and Taxation, Traffic and Transportation, as well as external commissions on the Zika virus and the water situation of the municipalities of Minas Gerais. He was elected councilor for Belo Horizonte in 2012. The future minister did not complete a degree in Civil Engineering from UniBH.

In addition to being able to convince the elected government team of President-elect Jair Bolsonaro not to merge the Ministry of Tourism with other portfolios, the Joint Parliamentary Front in Defense of Tourism, presided over by the federal deputy Herculano Passos (MDB-SP), was responsible for future head of the portfolio.
