Marzia Turrini, BMM Test Labs Senior VP Business Development

“I would not be surprised by a boom in sports betting in Brazil”

With extensive experience in the regulation sector in different international gaming markets, Marzia Turrini, Senior VP Business Development at BMM Test Labs, will contribute her vision on the subject as a speaker in one of the panles of the Online Gaming Summit that will take place in São Paulo. “Brazil has to adopt a free market policy. Only in this way the country can benefit from the legalization of this sector,” she says.

Next December 3-4, at the Pacaembu Stadium in São Paulo, OGS Brazil will bring together operators, product and service providers, regulators and authorities to discuss the current scenario and future regulation of the Online Gameing and Sports Betting sector in Brazil.

GMB - With what expectations do you get to the Online Gaming Summit Brasil, an unprecedented event for our market? Which services/products of your company would highlight for this new market that opens in the country?
Marzia Turrini - The most recent events in theme and legalization of sports betting have without any doubt rekindled the interest in the future of Brazil for all the international communication of the gaming sector. We, as BMM testlab, want to be at the forefront in supporting this initial process as well as in the future stages. BMM has a vast and recognized experience in the regulatory field. Our certification, advisory and cybersecurity services support the entire sector: manufacturers, game and platform producers, operators and regulators. We are confident that Brazil will represent one of the most important markets for our company.

Recently, the Brazilian Congress legalized sports betting. What do you think of this progress? Which are your expectations now?
Political changes always bring about changes in our sector. On this occasion the changes are very positive and open the door to the legalization of the industry.

How do you think the regulation of the sports betting business should be in the country? Do you expect it to be with multi-licenses?
Brazil has to adopt a free market policy. Only in this way the country can benefit from the legalization of this sector.

If you should suggest to the Finance Ministry some model of a country with successful regulation to take as an example, what would it be?
There is not a single model that works. The best is to develop a model that includes the best of international regulations, that is, a model that benefits employers and the state, always taking into account that each country is characterized by its idiosyncrasies.

Is this kind of knowledge-sharing meeting something that the country needs to prevent the population from being misinformed about the false "dangers" of the gaming sector?
This type of meeting is one of the ways we have at our disposal to communicate to the citizen that the gaming sector is like any other one, that if regulated and controlled, generates employment and taxes.

Online gaming seems today to be the fastest growing modality in the world. Why do you think this is happening?
The gaming sector evolves in step with the other sectors. Technology shows us more and more revolutionary advances and new generations of players ask for something different. For this same reason the online game is having so much growth. In spite of that, it is not necessary to think that it will be a substitute for the face-to-face game. The two forms of entertainment need to work together. The multi-channel strategy is still the key to success.

In terms of size, what kind of market do you imagine the Brazilian one will be? Which product do you think will be most successful?
Brazil will undoubtedly be one of the most important markets in the gaming sector. As I mentioned before, the key to success is generated by a management that sees the face-to-face game and the online game working together and not in antagonism. As for the product segment I would not be surprised by a boom in sports betting.

How do you think the new government led by Jair Bolsonaro will address the rest of the gaming market in the country?
Jair Bolsonaro wants a liberal Brazil ... Economic liberalism fosters economy, growth, innovation and minimizes State intervention. I trust that the new Government will apply this philosophy and legalize the gaming industry. This policy will not only have economic benefits for the industry and for the entire country but will also raise the ethical principles to a sector that does not deserve to be considered a taboo.
