The recent proposal, which saw fines and prison sentences for illegal gambling drastically increased, has been postponed as the authorities finalise its precise wording.
“The government is taking a further look at the existing provisions of the entire Gambling Law and proposed changes to these,” said attorney general Samuel Bulgin.
“The current penalties are woefully inadequate and fail to reflect the present ramifications of illegal gambling. The public will be updated once the review is concluded.”
The original draft bill, which suggested increasing prison sentences from one year to three years for operators alongside a $10,000 fine, previously only $400, was branded as “draconian” by pro-regulation opposition leader Ezzard Miller.
Bulgin added that, until updated, “current provisions against illegal gambling remain in full effect in the Cayman Islands.”
