Online gaming sector sales exceed USD 480 million in Colombia

Colombia's regulator, Coljuegos, reported that online gaming sales from June 2017 to October 2018 reached US$ 481.9 million, while the monopoly exploitation rights collection already reached US$ 10.8 million. Until October of this year, a total of 1,695,614 players are registered in the 16 authorized websites that offer sports betting services.

The president of Coljuegos, Juan B. Pérez Hidalgo, highlighted the growing interest of Colombians for this entertainment option, which has one of the highest rates of return to players. In the case of Colombia, it must be at least 83% of sales.

"In the 16 websites authorized to place bets on real sporting events, there are currently registered a total of 1,695,614 players (as of October 2018), having presented the highest record in the month of June 2018, with a total of 258,381 new players when the football World Cup was held. The average of new monthly registrations is 110,795 users," he explained.

"This exponential growth of players that has been presented can be understood due to the rate of return that online gaming have reached, which has reached 89%, with almost US$ 400 million delivered in prizes during 2018," he added.

Hidalgo also highlighted the articulated work jointly developed by Coljuegos and the businessmen of the industry. Although Colombia was the first country in the Americas to regulate this activity, he observed that innovation in different platforms does not slow down and is consolidated as an important entertainment alternative for Colombians and that it is also making an important contribution to the financing of the health in the country.

"One of the great challenges we have is to continue working to achieve the greatest legality in the sector. We have blocked, together with the ICT Ministry and the Cybernetic Center of the National Police, 1,805 websites that offered illegal gambling, and we continue to coordinate efforts with all State instruments to combat those who do not contribute to the health of Colombians,” he also mentioned.

“It is not fair that those who pay taxes have unequal competition. This is why we continue to promote this sector that is increasingly important in the country's finances," concluded Pérez Hidalgo.
