Buenos Aires Legislature authorized online gaming in the City

The Legislature of the City of Buenos Aires authorized the online gaming activity in the district, where until now it was illegal, and allowed the bets on football matches results, although it prohibited the participation of the directors and players of the participating clubs of the event. The local government expects to raise 500 million pesos (US$ 13.3m). The Province also regulated the activity recently.

The law obtained 34 votes in favor of the ruling party and 22 against opposing blocs that raised their resistance due to the damages that the activity may have, such as ludopathy.

The initiative creates "online gaming" and distinguishes them from "chance or skill, sports betting, virtual gambling and betting non-sporting events made by using machines, instruments or any type or technology," says news agency Telam.

The vote was accompanied in the session of an agreement signed between the management of Horacio Rodríguez Larreta in the City and that of María Eugenia Vidal in the Province of Buenos Aires for the coordination of actions in the exploitation of online gaming between both jurisdictions.

According to officials of the Executive before the Legislature, it has been detected about a thousand Internet sites that operate games of chance in a clandestine way, for which the regulations were pushed so that the State can regularize the bets to protect "the rights of minors, consumers and users, as well as preventing money laundering."

The measure, meanwhile, prohibits bettors who are linked to sporting events such as the football league matches "the athletes, coaches or other direct participants in the event or sport activity on which the bet is made and the directors of the participating sports entities or organizers regarding the sporting event or activity on which the bet is placed."
