Conajzar ratifies sports betting license to Daruma Sam in Paraguay

The new president of gaming regulator of Paraguay (Conajzar), Óscar Ramón Portillo Martínez, has signed a contract that gives the monopoly of sports betting to the Daruma Sam, after the scandal that ended with the resignation of the former head of the entity, Javier Balbuena.

With the signing of the contract, Daruma Sam (through the Apostala brand) becomes the only sports betting operator in the country.

According to state estimates, the exploitation of sports betting for a period of five years would inject around USD 98 million to the national economy.

In a statement published on the website of the Ministry of Finance of Paraguay, the regulator ratifies the concession following a "unanimous" decision by the members of Conajzar

On March 7, Javier Balbuena, who was president of Conajzar for more than four years, announced that he would step aside. Although he stated that the reasons for the resignation had to do with his intention to "return to the private sector", the lawyer of the gaming operator YEM S.A., Julio Godoy, assures that Balbuena was forced to resign. "Apparently, he did not want to sign" the document ratifying the award to Daruma Sam, he said.

YEM is one of the bidding companies that is taking legal actions against the tender, at first, and now, against the decree that grants the concession to Apostala.
