Decision of the president of the bank Pedro Guimarães

Caixa will no longer sponsor football teams

Pedro Guimarães, the new president of the Caixa Econômica Federal, decided once and for all: the bank will no longer sponsor football teams. The measure had already been discussed by Economy Minister Paulo Guedes earlier this month. Caixa's current contracts with teams will be fulfilled until the end - in March - and will not be renewed.

The impasse over Caixa's sponsorship of soccer clubs began when the new president of the bank, Pedro Guimarães, was inaugurated, Economy Minister Paulo Guedes stated that there were better destinations for Caixa to invest in advertising.

"Sometimes it's possible to do things a hundred times better with less resources than spending on advertising on football teams”, he said.

From then on, much news surfaced around the subject. The CBF requested a meeting with Caixa's board of trustees to discuss the issue, and the clubs began to settle accounts by discharging Caixa's funds.

During the review of the contracts by Caixa, also came the news that the government did not like what it saw in the bank's closed deals with the clubs.

According to information it was discovered that there were many "consultants" taking a part of the money and some clubs were not even with the Treasury.

Already as the last scene of this novel, in the last weekend when the state championships began to open the football season, no club entered the field with the logo boxed in the uniform.

Caixa invested US $ 49.842 million in football sponsorship in 2018. The bank has been betting on football since 2012, when it closed its sponsorship with Athletico Paranaense, Avaí and Figueirense. Since then, the company invested  $ 172.536. million in all agreements. Currently, the bank had a contract with 25 clubs.

Besides the soccer-related measure, it is also circulating that neither Caixa or Banco do Brasil are spending money on advertising this year.

President Jair Bolsonaro went to Twitter to talk about the cuts:

"The Minister of the Secretariat of Government, General Santos Cruz, announced the end of the contract of $ 7800 million of dollars / year with international press office. In addition, we have zeroed the advertising costs of Caixa and Banco do Brasil in this beginning of government and we intend to close in a fair and lean way! In previous governments, these spending exceeded hundreds of millions. It was one of many sources of excuse for the groups in power, most of whose members are in prison. An irresponsibility to the detriment of the real demands of Brazilians and the State! "
