Mexico considers incorporating a tax on online betting

The parliamentary group of the Morena party (National Regeneration Movement) in the Chamber of Deputies presented an initiative to collect 20% of Special Tax on Production and Services (IEPS) for online gambling. 'We live in an economic market where online betting is growing every day and still does not have a concise regulation in this regard,' said Deputy Emmanuel Reyes Carmona.

Emmanuel Reyes Carmona, deputy of the Morena party, presented the proposal in the Parliamentary Gazette to charge 20% of IEPS to online bets and equate the collection of taxes with physical casinos.

"The point is that we live in an economic market where online betting is growing every day and still does not have any concise regulation in this regard," said the parliamentarian.

"There are still many tax loopholes and the plus is that they remain a tax haven for casinos and online sports betting houses," Carmona describes in the statement of reasons to incorporate the new tax.

The initiative is in the first instance, and should be analyzed by commissions to be elevated to parliamentary discussion.
