Sports Integrity Summit in Brasilia

"Brazil is on the eve of a new era"

The Sports Integrity Summit organized by the International Institute of Governance and Risk (GovRisk) and Genius Sports began on Wednesday morning, at the headquarters of the Superior Labor Court, in Brasilia. The first panel was attended by SECAP secretary Alexandre Manoel and the event organizers. The timing of the sports betting market and the importance of protecting fans' passion for sports were debated.

The President of the Court, Minister João Batista Brito Pereira, opened the event by welcoming those present and highlighting the importance that the issue of sports integrity is being discussed.

Then, the Secretary of Planning, Energy and Lottery (SECAP) of the Ministry of Economy, Alexandre Manoel Ângelo da Silva, gave the opening speech emphasizing that Brazil is experiencing an important moment regarding the opening of lotteries and the regulation of sports betting.

"Brazil occupies the 97th position in per capita collection and this is due to some problems that we are solving: confusing legal framework, absence of two lottery modalities and the sector based on the state monopoly for over 50 years," said Alexandre Manoel.

According to him, the three solutions for these problems are: the structuring last year of a simple legal framework, the creation of the instant lottery and the odd-fixed, and finally, the increase of the competitive environment. “Once opened to national and international companies, Brazil will only gain from a market modeled to attract investment and foster innovation in the sector,” he added.

The next speaker was GovRisk Director of Government Projects, Dominic Le Moignan. He highlighted the objectives of the event, which is to discuss answers to some of the main questions surrounding the theme: How can Brazil protect its athletes from the most different leagues and divisions? How can technology help with this task of tracking and detecting problems like match fixing? “The focus has never been as big as it is now, and this is a question that goes beyond the borders of any country. It's critical to ensure the reliability of the sports we love so much,” said Dominic.

Closing the opening panel, Genius Sport Communications Director, Chris Dougan, recalled that the reputation - whether of a team, an athlete or a competition - takes years to build and takes very little to destroy. “Brazil is on the eve of a new era. It is important to work together to protect one of Brazil's greatest assets: the passion for sport.”

The GovRisk Sport Integrity Summit features four more panels this Wednesday to discuss sport protection issues such as technology, regulation and international best practices with main policy makers, regulators, and leaders of sports, betting and state-owned firms.
