Bill that enables cruise ship casinos while in Uruguayan ports has initial approval

The project submitted by the Executive Power to enable by law the operation of casinos aboard ocean cruises that arrive in Uruguayan ports, has half parliamentary sanctions, said the president of the National Port Administration (ANP), Alberto Díaz. It is expected that the rule will take effect for next season and would apply to cruises that arrive in Punta del Este and Montevideo.

"The initiative has the agreement of political parties for approval," said Diaz. "The project was approved at the time in the Chamber of Deputies and passed to the Senate, where modifications were made that were not substantive," he added.

Díaz said that, once the project becomes law, “it will allow us, just as it happens in Chile, that cruise ships can stay longer in national waters and open their casinos only for cruise passengers, which will contribute to that they stay more hours in the country.”

This possibility will facilitate, even, that the tourists on board expand the options of walks that allow them to know more the country, to witness different shows, which, as a whole, will contribute to improve the income by this tourist modality, reflected Díaz.

There is an expectation that the rule will take effect for the next season, as it is expected that in some extraordinary session held by the Lower House by the end of the year, it will be approved. It would apply to cruise ships arriving in Punta del Este or Montevideo.
