Fight against evangelical bench

Rio de Janeiro’s Mayor to defend gaming release in audience at Deputies Chamber

The Mayor of Brasil’s Rio de Janeiro, Marcelo Crivella, will attend a public hearing that the Participatory Legislation Commission holds next December 3rd, in Brasilia, in the Chamber of Deputies. Struggling for the legalization of gambling and a casino in the ‘wonderful city’, he has been under pressure from the evangelical bench where he started his political career.

Marcelo Crivella was invited to discuss the approval of gambling in Brazil, during a public hearing that the Participatory Legislation Commission will held next December 3rd, in Brasilia, in the Chamber of Deputies.

The Mayor, a licensed bishop of Universal church, has advocated for the reopening of casinos, unlike much of the evangelical bench where he began his political career.

Crivella's struggle to legalize gambling and casinos comes from the Mayor's contact with businessmen interested in investing in a new venture in Rio de Janeiro’s Porto Maravilha region. According to him, the installation of casinos would bring many benefits to the economy of the country.

“Investors, owners of the Singapore casino and the largest casino in Las Vegas, were already interested in putting up a large structure in Port Maravilha, which would be a big help to the economy and the whole tourism sector,” Crivella explained in a recent interview.

In a final move to raise awareness of the importance of casinos, Mayor Crivella spoke to businessmen from the ‘Juntos por Rio’ (Together for Rio) group at a recent meeting at the LSH hotel in Barra da Tijuca. At the reunion, he presented solutions to foster business and tourism in the city such as municipalization of the harbor quay and the release of casinos.

The operation of casinos within resorts also has a support that makes the difference: the influential president of the Deputies Chamber, Rodrigo Maia.
