With the rise of betting and for more transparency, CBF studies releasing VAR audios

The president of the Refereeing Commission, Leonardo Gaciba, admitted that the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) could disclose the conversations audios between field and video referees from 2020. “Football today lives a moment of financial numbers growing, at a time mainly in the advance of online betting, we want to have transparency so that there is no doubt that the direction of the VAR does not have any interference,” said Gaciba.

Gaciba admitted on Tuesday that the CBF is studying the possibility of releasing the audios of conversations between field and video referees from 2020. Since that year, all matches of the Brazilian Championship count with VAR (Video Assistant Referee), but clubs complain about the lack of transparency in arbitration decisions, as they can only access dialogues that take place during controversial situations if they send representatives to the CBF.

“Yes. We think about bringing the audio. President Rogério Caboclo is already studying the issue. Early next year we are thinking of evolving. We are studying releasing some audios, not all. We will ask this permission from the International Board, if all, not all, some of them we will show. Above all we want to give transparency to the video referee, to show the transparency with which the process is done,” said the former FIFA referee after attending a hearing in the House of Representatives that discussed the use of the VAR in football.

Deputy Luiz Antonio Teixeira (PP-RJ) has filed a Bill aimed at amending the Supporter Statute and including the obligation for CBF to disclose the audios of matches using the VAR. According to him, this is important to prevent problems with buying results that occurred in the past from recurring.

“For our part what we want is transparency. The bill is for the VAR booth audios and videos to be released after the games, so we know exactly how the decision thinking was done. Football today is a moment that every day we see growing financial numbers, at a time especially in the advance of online betting, we want to have transparency so that there is no doubt that the direction of the VAR does not have any interference,” he said.

Although he sees no problem in releasing the audios, Gaciba said he fears the misinterpretation of the technical terms used by arbitrators to analyze the situations.

“The only concern I have is that people want to interpret what they are talking about and give less value to the image. If I say that a player has given a reckless entry to the opponent, the home crowd will probably find it as a red card entry. There are terms of the rule that we use that many times people will not understand,” he concluded.
