Daniel Cossi, President of CBDEL

“2020 will be the turning point for casinos, online gaming and eSports in Brazil”

Daniel Cossi, President of the Brazilian Electronic Sport Confederation (CBDEL), will be a panelist for the upcoming edition of the OGS to be held in São Paulo. In this exclusive interview with GMB, he anticipates part of his talk and his insight of the current local market for eSports, sports betting and gaming in general. “Clarion as always leads content, information and networking when promoting such an important event,” says Cossi.

GMB - What is your expectation to participate in an event like OGS organized by Clarion in Sao Paulo? It is worth considering that with betting legalization can be broken a record of public interested in participating in the meeting.
Daniel Cossi - The highest expectations, is the second year in a row that I can share and contribute to an event sponsored by Clarion, especially the OGS, by adding information about eSport that has full synergy with the topics covered throughout the online gaming business chain, casinos and new forms of disruptive sports added to this ecosystem. Clarion as always leads content, information and networking when promoting such an important event to aggregate and gather in one place diverse minds and professionals who act directly in regulation, legislation and business models for this market.

Could you anticipate some of the key concepts you will present to the public during your talk?
It’ll be related to the electronic sports and the way it is taken to the online betting market and its realization within this ecosystem. I will address the environment in which eSports is inserted in Brazil and worldwide in relation to its way of being practiced online and the involvement of this sport including betting and other indirect investment.

What is your vision of the gaming market in Brazil and what are the main ways you should follow to mature and consolidate?
One of the biggest market ever to lead the emergence of the online gaming, casinos and eSports market in the world. Those who are congruent and participating in this emerging market in any way, whether actively networking and promoting business opportunities and related activities, or regulation and legislation, will surely have a large share of business possibilities and other opportunities inherent in this sector.

From your area, what support could you make for the regulation that the Ministry of Economy develops for the betting market? What would be the top 3 advice you could give?
For the regulation of the betting market we could add values in the sense of the integrity of eSports modality preserving the athlete and teams of bad practices using their names, and places of law. I think the three main foundations for this regulation are: 1) clarity in the model of rules, rights and in particular duties of each stakeholder, 2) scope of what will be regulated for both casinos and any non-sport online gaming modalities (such as eSports), 3) governmental participation in preserving public interests in the collection of taxes that may be applied and in the transparency of this resource management arising from any such taxes or fees.

Compared to the rest of Latin America, do you think Brazil's advances in 2019 were fast or slow for what the gaming and eSports market demands?
I think that taking into account the whole political landscape, whether or not we want to move the regulations and legislations on which we are 100% dependent, the conversations, dealings and definitions were quick, and that shows us a lot of positive things, especially with regard to putting this to be done, in practice and out of the middle of negotiations and ideas of political persuasion and turn it into a tangible market, generate jobs, foreign exchange and much more.

Do you believe that the opening of the lottery market in Brazil with the grant of LOTEX to the IGT / SG consortium is great news for private companies that want to come to the country and invest?
Yes, this causes the market to see greater control over its own actions with respect to future new business and possible investments without government intervention, which unfortunately raises doubts due to our past corruption and parallel negotiations for various permits in different markets. But with the privatization and decentralization of decisions like the ones we talk about, it certainly brings to Brazil a myriad of greater possibilities.

Can you imagine 2020 as the year of Brazil's big takeoff on eSports and iGaming?
2020 is the YEAR of everything happening. It will be the turning point for casinos, online gambling and its varied aspects and ways of management and business models, especially for eSports because regulation of this area is being made, especially focusing on athletes and not on the market that should not be regulated, at least not in the private but in the institutional one. The competitions, events like summits will all have their peak in 2020.
