Sports betting regulation in Brazil may inject US$ 23.5 million in sponsorships

The entry of sports betting will increase the amounts invested in sports, especially in football. The expectation is at least another R$ 100 million (US$ 23.5) only in Brasileirão Series A. In a debate on sports betting and the sports market at the ‘2nd Fórum Máquina do Esporte’, mediator Ian Cook, director of consultancy Kroll, showed data from a study stating that half of Premier League clubs in UK have master sponsorship of bookmakers.

"The estimate is a check of about R$ 100 million (US$ 23.5) for football in sponsorships, depending on the opening of the market. Today, you have none of the top ten bookmakers in the world sponsoring clubs in the country. These big companies are waiting for regulation, to see if the Brazilian market will be attractive or not," commented Luiz Felipe Maia, a partner of Fymsa Advogados and who has been studying the world betting market for ten years.

However, even without the arrival of the big ones, the market has already warmed, as revealed by Adalberto Leister Filho, journalist and professor of journalism and sports marketing.

"Starting in June 2020, with the full functioning of the market, we may be able to get full sponsorship for clubs and athletes. I have already appointed some students to work on bookmakers producing content. It is a market that is warming up," he said.

Within this scenario, Cook stressed that it is vital to know, first, the origin of the company that wants to sponsor the sport. In addition, it is also necessary to create a healthy and fair betting environment with all bettors, a challenge that needs close monitoring.

"The athlete can’t participate in betting, not only because of his game but because he has inside information about everyone else. Clubs and entities need to educate athletes and their families for this. Athlete who does this can be banned from sport," concluded Adalberto Leister Filho.
