Chamber’s Commission approves transfer of lottery funds to female sport in Brazil

The Women's Rights Committee of the House of Representatives approved Bill 4089/19 providing for the application in women's sport of 30% of federal lottery money to the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) and the Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB). The proposal now follows for analysis of the Sports; and Constitution and Justice and Citizenship commissions.

Presented by Congresswoman Mariana Carvalho (PSDB-RO), the text inserts provisions in Law 13756/18. According to the parliamentarian, the transfers to the two entities in 2017 totaled more than R$ 350 million (US$ 87.5m) from lotteries administered by Caixa Econômica Federal, according to the latest data provided by the state-owned bank.

The opinion of the rapporteur, Mrs Rose Modesto (PSDB-MS), was in favor of the proposal. “We need to give women athletes and women sport resources and visibility,” she said.

Modesto cites research data conducted in 2018 by Sporting Intelligence, which shows that female athletes earn up to 40% less than the minimum received by men.

Procedure

The proposal will be analyzed conclusively by the Sports; and Constitution and Justice and Citizenship commissions.
