Brazil to receive first CS: GO Major in 2020, ESL One Rio

The first Counter Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO) major of 2020 will be in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The ESL One Rio was officially confirmed this week and will take place at Jeunesse Arena, in Barra da Tijuca. With a final between May 21st and 24th, the competition will distribute the US$ 1 million prize pool and bring together the best CS: GO teams in the world. Tickets for ESL One Rio 2020 are already on sale.

14 teams are already confirmed for ESL One Rio 2020. The vacancies were decided in relation with the teams’ performance during the StarLadder Berlin Major 2019. The MIBR team is classified as "New Challenger" and is the only representative of Brazil so far. The other places for the Major will be defined in the qualifiers, the so-called Minors, which begin in April.

ESL One Rio will be the seventh major tournament organized by ESL and the third tournament held in Brazil. The company has already toured the country with the fourth season of the ESL Pro League, held in São Paulo in 2016, and the ESL One Belo Horizonte, which took place in 2018.

The last major of CS: GO was StarLadder Berlin Major 2019, which finished in September. The winner at the time was the Danish team Astralis, who beat AVANGAR in the grand finale to win the cup and the US$ 500,000 prize pool. Valve organizes two Majors tournaments a year, which are treated as a world category and the most prestigious competitions in the FPS scenario.
