Jerseys will have free spaces

Inter and Gremio already negotiate with sportsbooks for sponsorship by 2020

From 2020, Brazilian football teams Grêmio and Inter will have the possibility of stamping a new sponsorship on their jerseys as the contract with the Laghetto hotel chain ends in December and will not be renewed. The online betting market is an income alternative for both clubs, who are negotiating with interested websites, said GaúchaZH’s journalist Eduardo Gabardo. Currently, 13 of the 20 Brazil’s Serie A clubs have been sponsored by eight bookmakers.

Porto Alegre’s International and Gremio jersey for the 2020 season will have a new sponsor or at least one more space. This is because the contract with the Laghetto hotel chain expires in late 2019 and the bond will not be renewed.

The hotel brand, in addition to providing the concentration place for Inter in Porto Alegre, prints its logo on the team’s jersey, below the number on the player's back. A market trend is online gambling companies, which already sponsor 11 Series A clubs.

Internacional has already probed some brands, but nothing concrete. Banrisul, the state bank that has been in partnership with the club since 2001, will continue as its master sponsor. Internacional will change hotels in Porto Alegre.

Grêmio lives the same situation, but already has an early departure in partnership with the construction company Melnick Even. This is Moinhos 1903, the first themed hotel of a football club in Brazil. However, the development will be ready only in 2022. The output for the club should be the hotel Deville, the same it used until 2017.

Internacional is already looking for a new place to stay. For this, it sought values from four hotels in Porto Alegre. Inter is currently on the 11th floor of Hotel Laghetto Stilo Higienópolis, where space is featured.

By enacting a Provisional Measure born to alter the distribution of federal lottery funds, then-President Michel Temer (MDB) allowed sports betting to no longer be banned in Brazil. Its regulation is expected to take a few more months with intense congressional debate, but it already makes a difference in the sports sponsorship market.

A survey conducted by Ibope / Repucom shows that throughout the Brasileirão championship, 13 of the 20 Serie A clubs were sponsored by eight bookmakers. New to the sponsorship market, this sector is already the sixth largest in number of brands, behind health services (nine), food (16), construction (16) and financial, as well as sports equipment suppliers.

Moreover, never so many brands were present in the uniforms of the 20 clubs of the Series. Over the course of the year, 155 different sponsors were in the players' clothing, a 30% increase over the previous year when 111 brands were displayed. This means that, on average, each club advertises seven different brands during the tournament.
