Radio Bandeirantes highlights gaming legalization debate in Brazil

Brazilian leading Rádio Bandeirantes station opened an important space for the debate on the legalization of gaming in this week’s edition of the Jornal Gente show. Journalists José Paulo de Andrade, Claudio Humberto, Thais Heredia, Rafael Colombo and Pedro Campos debated the issue showing support for the regulation of the activity and also discussed about an interview of Dep. Elmar Nascimento where he talks about the benefits that the industry will bring to the country.

The debate between journalists begins with José Paulo de Andrade and Claudio Humberto recalling historical facts that led to the ban on gaming, such as the story of Dona Santinha, wife of President Dutra, which led him to cancel a decree closing the casinos and also a possible reopening during President Figueiredo's government, which did not happen.

Journalists discussed the fact that Brazil is one of the few non-Muslim countries that do not have legalized gambling, which puts it in a backward position vis-à-vis the rest of the world and refuted the argument that the activity can encourage money laundering by stating that it is one of the weakest arguments by those who do not want legalization, as it can be addressed with real data from the gaming industry.

They also commented on the interview of Dep. Elmar Nascimento given to another show of the same radio station in which he talks about the benefits of gaming starting with the creation of jobs, especially in the casino resorts that can be opened with the regulation of the activity.
Another point addressed in the congressman's interview was President Jair Bolsonaro's interest in legalization and his willingness to listen to the evangelical bench.

"He said he had nothing against it, he even had a dream of transforming a region of Rio de Janeiro into a kind of Caribbean, but because of his respect for the electorate linked to the evangelical churches, he would not do anything run over," said Elmar Nascimento to Radio Bandeirantes.

The interview ends with the parliamentarian explaining the terms of the PL 442/91 that is in the House and is ready to be voted in the plenary of the House.

The conversation ends with journalists recalling curious cases of clandestine gaming venues housed in the most unimaginable places, the number of workers living underemployed in this activity, which already reaches 700,000 people, and the experience of countries like Portugal that reactivated their tourism with casinos.

Popular journalist Rafael Colombo stressed that legalization should not be based on moral issues. “Everything can be discussed. The only aspect that I find indisputable is the moral and the religious. Each has their own conviction about what they think is best for their lives. It makes no sense to submit a decision that must be a State decision, by convincing a small group of MPs, who represent an important part of society, but which is a niche. You can't pass this whole issue through a religious filter that is a particular conviction.”

Jornal Gente, that is broadcast by Rádio Bandeirantes Monday to Saturday from 8:00 am to 10:00 am, is a show with lot of debates, interviews with personalities of the economy and national politics, as well as columnists from different areas such as philosophy, sports and the automotive market.
