According to Pina, there are many government projects to leverage the economy with the goal to seek efficiency from a privatization program in order to get the government out of activities that are not its expertise.
“The microeconomic agenda will have large spaces to reinforce the growth of the country as a whole, and the gaming industry must be seen as an economic activity. The gaming sector already exists in Brazil, and some are legalized, such as lotteries, as well as illegal (jogo do bicho and others). Legalization with rules is good and we know that it is difficult to regulate gambling, but it needs to be done, including to generate development in several regions of Brazil,” said Fábio Pina.
According to the Undersecretary of Commerce and Services Development, gambling has to be taxed correctly so that the tax is on the gain and not on the operation as a whole. “We must end prejudice and show the good side of the activity.”
“Gambling generates jobs, taxes and development and that is the reason for the economic sense of the sector. The online aspect is moving and regulation will come in order to ensure employment and income, benefiting society as a whole. This is the gateway to other activities such as casinos.”
Pina said this is a good time to gain public opinion that the gaming industry is legitimate and cannot be left out of strong economic activity.
“Brazil is one of the few countries in the world that has not yet regulated the gambling sector. It's time to change that out of a serious and solidly informed debate, looking at examples of success on every continent,” he said.
