As the football World Cup took place in Russia last year, it has been a period of great activity for the sports betting market. According to information released by local media, Russian bookmakers recorded approximately US$18 billion in bets in 2018. The figure is understood to apply to not only licensed but also unlicensed bookmakers.

According to local resources, in 2018 Russians spent 70 percent more on betting than the year before.

Representatives of the leading bookmakers – Liga Stavok, Parimatch, and Bwin – agreed with the assessment that last year was record-breaking for the Russian betting market.

During the World Cup alone Russians placed US$ 3.75 billion with licensed bookmakers.

The size of an average bet was US$ 22.45, and 4.7 million people made a bet on sports in Russian at least once last year.
