GGR for Spain’s online sector up by over 4%

According to The Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling’s (DGOJ) fourth quarterly report on the development of the online gambling market (October-December 2018), GGR for the quarter stood at €189.46m an increase of 4.21% over the previous quarter and an increase over the same quarter in 2017 of 10.74%. Of the total GGR, €99.93m (52.74%) was generated by sports betting.

According to the report, €64.77m was generated via online casinos (34.19%), €21.08.m via poker (11.13%), €3.51m via bingo (1.85%), while GGR for competitions stood at €0.17m (0.09%).

The sports betting segment experienced a growth rate of 2.33% compared to the previous quarter and -2.10% year on year. Once again the growth is mainly down to in play betting which grew by as much 13.13% while conventional bets decreased by -5.31% compared to the previous quarter.

The online casino sector continued to grow increasing by 6.38% compared to the third quarter of 2018 and reported an annual variation of 32.59%. According to the DGOJ, the growth in the online casino sector is mainly due to online slots, which were first permitted in 2015, which has in turn led to an increasingly higher market share.

Poker filed an increase of 6.40% over the previous quarter and an increase of 36.54% year on year. The increase is mainly due to cash poker, which recorded a growth in the quarter of 8.95%.

The monthly average number active users stood at 858,285 a growth of 25.49% with respect to the same quarter of the previous year. Meanwhile the monthly average of new registrations stood at 256,070 users an annual increase of 27.61%.
