MGM Resorts enters Japan via MLB activation

Major League Baseball (MLB) has announced MGM Resorts International as the title sponsor of its season-opening series in Japan. The deal will see the two-game set between the Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners christened the 2019 MGM MLB Opening Series. This is the first activation since MGM became MLB’s first-ever official gaming partner back in November.

As part of the arrangement, which has been agreed in partnership with the MLB Players Association (MLBPA), MGM’s logo will be displayed on the uniform of the A’s, while it will also benefit from brand visibility at the Tokyo Dome, where both games are being played.

The title sponsorship marks the first activation since Las Vegas-based MGM became MLB’s first-ever official gaming partner and official entertainment partner back in November, building on similar agreements with the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the National Hockey League (NHL).

“In just a few months as partners, MGM Resorts has really embraced this relationship and expanded their presence in the league,” said Noah Garden, MLB’s executive vice president of commerce. “MGM Resorts will have a great opportunity to engage with and experience the extraordinary passion of baseball fans in Japan. We’re excited to have our new partners become such a significant part of our games in Tokyo.”

The deal signed by MLB and MGM in November also made the casino firm an official partner of the league’s grassroots baseball events in Japan such as the MLB Road Show.

“We are very excited to partner with MLB and the MLBPA to deliver a one-of-a-kind fan experience that celebrates baseball in Japan,” added MGM Resorts chairman and chief executive Jim Murren. “We look forward to giving fans a unique experience to participate in baseball activities in and out of the Tokyo Dome.”

The two games between the A’s and the Mariners are scheduled to take place on 20th and 21st March, with both fixtures counting as home matches for the Oakland franchise.
