New Head of Tourism Committee in Brazilian House wants casinos at agenda center

Deputy Newton Cardoso Jr. was unanimously elected to chair the Tourism Committee in the Chamber of Deputies, with the support of the Parliamentary Tourism Front. After his first speech, he informed that the commission will prioritize the analysis of matters that potentiate the sector as the return of casinos in Brazil. 'This legitimate activity can generate one to two million jobs, and US$ 7.85 billion in tax revenues for the country,' said the deputy.

In an interview with TV Câmara shortly after the election to the presidency of the Tourism Commission, Congressman Newton Cardoso Jr. (MDB-MG) spoke about the importance of regulation of casinos and recalled the historical participation of his State in the gaming market.

"I come from a state, Minas Gerais, where was installed the first casino in Brazil, in the municipality of Caxambu. So, more than anything, I maintain that this activity legitimizes, with strong financial controls to avoid any kind of deviation money laundering, that it be reimplanted in Brazil, but with big investments."

The parliamentarian also highlighted the high expectations that the legalization of casinos brings to the country's economy, mainly in terms of job creation and tax collection.

"The estimates are very positive, not only those of job creation, that we can generate one to two million places if this activity is fully regulated in Brazil, but also a very positive expectation of collection. It is estimated that US$ 7.85 billion per year in tax revenues from this sector, which is an activity that can actually contribute to the leisure of the population and being well implemented will be beneficial for the Brazilian population," he added.

Newton Cardoso Jr. was elected president of the Tourism Committee last Thursday’s session, with the support of the Parliamentary Front of the sector and also with the presence of the Minister of Tourism, Marcelo Alvaro Antonio, who is a licensed deputy. The new president of the commission also said that in addition to the casinos, he wants to bring propositions that generate jobs and income and make Brazil have a strong participation in the international tourism market.

"The focus should be on tourism actions that can generate more jobs. Brazil needs to participate with at least 10% of the world tourism market, as today participates with almost nothing. For this, it is necessary to bring technology and intelligence to the development of public policies for tourism. That is our focus, these are the propositions we are going to bring throughout the year,” concluded Newton Cardoso Jr.
