Febralot sent opposing note

Brazil’s Caixa plans to open 7000 new lottery retailers, causes controversy

In a meeting with Contraf-CUT, São Paulo Banking Union and Caixa Employers' Executive Committee, CEF president Pedro Guimarães revealed that 7,000 new lottery retailers will be opened in the country. The novelty displeased the Brazilian Federation of Lottery Enterprises (Febralot), which sent a letter calling for the closure of new bids for the planned opening of these stores.

The meeting was held last Tuesday (26), with the presence of Caixa’s president, Pedro Guimarães, the vice presidents of “Gestão de Pessoas”, Roney de Oliveira Granemann, and “Customers, Business and Digital Transformations”, Valter Gonçalves Nunes. The workers of the banking sector were represented by the presidents of Contraf-CUT, Juvândia Moreira, and the Banking Union of São Paulo, Ivone Silva, accompanied by the coordinator of the Caixa Employers' Executive Committee, Dionísio Reis.

Among the main points discussed at the meeting were the maintenance of the permanent negotiation table, the date for the disclosure of Caixa's balance sheet, the contracting of approved tenders and the opening of new retailers.

The retailers issue came out precisely in this last point concerning the agencies. Caixa's president, Pedro Guimarães, confirmed that some will be closed, but that there are plans to open new units, given the collection of the union movement on the importance of Caixa in more distant neighborhoods or small cities, without any other banking service options. And closing the matter, Guimarães revealed that 7,000 new lottery retailers will be opened in the country.

The revelation of Caixa’s head generated a new polemic in the lottery sector. On Thursday, Febralot (Brazilian Federation of Lottery Enterprises) announced that it has sent a note opposing the idea of the public bank to open new lottery agencies.

In the document sent by Febralot to the president of Caixa, the entity stated that there will be financial, social, commercial and structural losses, in addition to the fact that there is a rule established in Law 12,869 / 2013, requiring procedures that can’t be ignored for inclusion of new Lottery Units in the country.

Febralot concluded the letter signed by its president, Jodismar Amaro, noting that, if the decision is made, there may be the real and immediate closing of other lottery units that already have difficulties in staying active given the numerous problems that the category has faced since many years.
