Grêmio joins other Brazilian football clubs to market sports betting rights

After registering the highest turnover in its history last year with US$ 103 million, Grêmio is ready to seek money in new markets with the commercialization of the broadcast rights of Brasileirão, sports betting and games out of the country. The negotiation should be handled in block by the Series A clubs, with supervision of the CBF. 'This is an important opportunity,' explains Grêmio’s CEO, Carlos Amodeo.

Still in the first half of April, the sale of the TV rights of Brasileirão abroad must be defined. In addition, the club may also profit from other properties, such as the marketing of betting and gaming rights outside the country. The initial projection of the direction is to count on the new revenues from September, in the middle of the second round of the national championship.

The negotiation for the rights of transmission abroad is carried out in block by the clubs of Series A. A commission was formed with the coordination of the CBF (Brazilian football ruling body), but the negotiations have not yet been concluded with the new partner.

A market estimate, not yet official, is that this agreement, which will be valid for the next four years, can yield up to US$ 7.5 million per season to Gremio’s coffers. That would be US$ 30 million in the whole period.

"The sovereignty of decision-making belongs to the clubs. This negotiation should be concluded in the coming days, with the conclusion of the hiring process, the declaration of the winning company and the marketing of these rights in relation to the next four years," explains Gremio’s CEO Carlos Amodeo, representative in the negotiations.

As soon as the agreement on foreign transmissions is signed, negotiations on betting and gaming rights outside the country should begin. The commercialization should also be handled collectively by the Series A clubs under the supervision of CBF, so that they may have more bargaining power at the negotiating table.

"This club committee should address these issues so that we can also check the options we have in the overseas market for this commercialization," adds Amodeo.

The block sale of these properties, however, is unusual for Brazilian clubs. Even so, there is still no parameter for the estimation of values in the negotiation.

In the specific issue of betting, Law 13.756 / 18, as a result of Provisional Measure (MP) 846/2018, was approved in December by the National Congress, but has not yet been regulated. This task will be in charge of the Ministry of Economy, which will have a two-year term, extendable by two more, to establish the norms of the activity.

"We still have not clear the methodology that will be used in the negotiation for these properties. But it's an important opportunity, "says the Gremio’s CEO.
