Luis Traversa, Betmotion’s COO for Latin America

"With the betting sector regulated, we want to get a license and settle in Brazil"

Betmotion, one of the leading betting companies in Latin America, has signed an advertising agreement to support the famous Brazilian beach volleyball couple Carol Solberg-Maria Elisa. Games Magazine Brasil interviewed exclusively Luis Traversa, COO of the company, to talk about this sponsorship, the firm’s plans to support other sports, the vision of the local market and the final arrival of Betmotion to the country after the activity is regulated.

GMB - This week, we learned about Betmotion's support to the two-time Brazilian beach volleyball champion, Carol Solberg and Maria Elisa. Could you give us more details of this partnership?

Luis Traversa - Our partnership consists of financial support for athletes and increased exposure in the media. On the other hand, they also help us spread our brand and introduce us even more into the Brazilian sports environment, increasing our visibility and making people who like sports know about Betmotion and the site's proposal.

Currently, does Betmotion have more sponsorships in Brazil? Are there others in mind?

In the past, we have worked with what we call "brand ambassadors." We've even had a two-year partnership with former professional swimmer and poker player Xuxa Scherer. In other countries, we are sponsoring sports teams, and we have decided to do the same in Brazil with the new law and regulatory perspective.

Are these sponsorships part of a plan to penetrate the company's business in the Brazilian market and also in the rest of Latin America?

Yes, we are happy and very excited about the new law of sports betting online in Brazil and also with the soon regulation. In this way, we want to enter the country with all our global experience that is already a reference in the market. We also have several projects underway in the rest of Latin America and in the medium term others in Europe and Asia.

How big do you think will be the Brazilian market for Betmotion? Is it comparable to some European countries?

This is difficult to say, because Europe is a well-regulated, mature region with a huge tradition of gambling that continues to grow in an incredible way. On the other hand, Brazil has enormous potential, but a rather immature market. In fact, it will depend a lot on regulation, which we expect to be done in an open, transparent and conscious way, so as to allow due control, tax collection and also the operator's profitability.

There are sports betting companies that started with sponsorships on football club shirts. Could Betmotion do the same in the short term?

Yes, and we are already talking to some clubs, but we are interested in sponsorships that really contribute to the Brazilian sport and not only that they put our brand on a shirt or banner.

How did you see the news of the legalization of the activity in Brazil in December and what do you think of the regulation being studied in the Ministry of Economy?

Legalization was great news. This is the correct path that most countries in the world are following. Now we have to wait for it to take effect. This should be done by building on the good experience of other countries that already have successfully proven regulation.

Is it an idea for the company to settle in Brazil with own staff and offices when the activity is regulated?

Yes, once the regulations are published - and with the prospect of getting a license - we will certainly be settling in Brazil.

What is the profile of the Brazilian bettor?

As far as we know, he loves sports betting on football.

What is your position regarding the general legalization of the gaming market in Brazil, besides sports betting? Are physical casinos a competition for you?

No, quite the opposite. It is already proven that the convergence of physical and online game is a multiplier and not a divisor.
