"Stadiums can generate US$ 5 million per year with bingos that new Gaming Law authorizes"

Government accepted the proposal filed by Flamengo and Fluminense to be the new managers of Maracanã stadium for the next six months. In the interview with CBN Rio, Pedro Trengrouse, a lawyer specializing in sports law and VP of the Special Commission on Games Law (OAB), says that 'the regulatory framework that is ready to be voted in the Chamber of Deputies can bring revenues in excess of US$ 5 million a year with the possibility of bingos in Brazilian stadiums.'

The invitation to the interview with CBN Rio was motivated by the decision of the state government to accept the proposal of Flamengo and Fluminense that both clubs manage the Maracanã stadium temporarily for 6 months. Pedro Trengrouse supported the idea and said it would be a natural decision.

"I see it in a very positive way. The only reason that explains Odebrecht managing the Maracanã is corruption. A contractor who builds a stadium has no way of managing, and seeing the Maracanã in the hands of the clubs is a natural thing that should have happened long time ago."

Commenting on the controversy generated by the decision, when the subject was the revenues that could be generated by the stadiums, Trengrouse recalled the bill of the Regulatory Framework of Games in Brazil, which is to be voted in the plenary of the Chamber of Deputies, saying stadiums could have another good source of income through bingos.

"This law has a device that says that every stadium can have a bingo with at least 300 machines. This means that the stadiums can have a revenue of at least US$ 5 million per year, only with this possibility that can be voted on anytime."

Trengrouse said that the approval of the gaming law along with the administration of the stadiums by the clubs can mean a transformation in the arenas for the country, not only with the increase of revenues, but also with costs reduction.

"I think it's necessary to take into account that the intelligent management of the stadiums, improving the situation, in this Maracanã case, and even thinking about this possibility that is ready to be voted on at any moment, can transform the stadiums and consequently lower the costs to the football clubs."

Finishing the interview, Trengrouse once again stated that stadiums run by clubs is a natural process. He cited the example of Arsenal with Emirates Stadium in England and said he hoped the Rio de Janeiro decision would be followed across the country.

"All over the world, successful stadiums have a direct link to the clubs, which is the case in England where the Arsenal arena represents almost half that of the club's revenue. I have a lot of hope for it. And it is natural, the strange thing is that the construction company manages the stadium, this is only explained by corruption. It is an important step that can be followed by the whole country."
