José Ramón Romero, partner of Loyra Abogados

"Participating in this audience in Brazil gives prestige to our office"

José Ramón Romero is the founder of the prestigious Spanish firm Loyra Abogados. As a specialist in the regulation of electronic games in Europe, he was summoned, among others, by the Sports Commission of the Chamber of Deputies to participate next May 22nd in the audition on online gambling. 'Brazil is a great country with which we are proud to be able to collaborate with. This allows us to be close to the possible birth of a norm,' Romero assured to Games Magazine Brazil.

The public hearing proposed by Congressman Evandro Roman to discuss with representatives of companies the regulation of online gaming in Brazil will be on Wednesday, May 22nd, at 14:30 in Annex II of the Congress, in Brasilia. In defense of the request, the parliamentarian recalled the lack of resources for sports and that the country lives a pact of mediocrity where it pretends that the gaming activity does not exist and, thus, the only one that loses is Brazil itself.

Regarding his feelings when he was called by the Congress of Brazil to contribute with his knowledge, Romero has no doubt: "It is an honor, without a doubt. For forty years, me and my colleagues at Loyra Abogados have been collaborating with parliaments and public administrations to contribute our knowledge in order to achieve a regulation of gaming, bets and lotteries in commercial venues and by Internet balanced and convenient for the Society of the different communities. Brazil is a great country with which we are proud to be able to collaborate with. Undoubtedly, the invitation gives prestige to our office and allows us to be close to the birth, or not, of a norm, or that helps in its interpretation."

José Ramón Romero has been an advisor to the boards of relevant companies in the gaming industry, some of them listed on stock markets. He is a founding member of the "Center for the Study of Legislation on Gambling" (CELEJ), a member of the International Association of Gaming Attorneys (IAGA) and the Spanish Association of Tax Advisors (A.E.A.F.). He has participated also as a speaker at various conferences and is the author of articles on gambling, television and taxation.

Romero, who confirmed his presence at the hearing, considers that he was called because of his long experience in the matter. "The invitation is due to our perspective of 40 years of specialization in the regulation of gambling, and the knowledge of the sector in many countries in Europe and America, as well as its regulatory processes, its errors and its successes," he said.

The Spanish lawyer does not dare to ensure that with this audience and the new government, Brazil is closer than ever to the legalization of the activity but considers this type of initiatives positive by the legislators. "The democratic elaboration of the laws makes it positive that the representatives of the people know first-hand and as thoroughly as possible the matters that are proposed by the law. If this is a step forward or one more of those that Brazil already had is something that the legislators will define. It is in their hands ", concluded José Ramón Romero Rodríguez.
